Is it a safe area of town? I will be visiting soon and I want to eat out at a nice affordable restaurant without getting robbed, mugged, or murdered. Lemme know

Great area rich in history and diversity....Tons of Ethiopian cuisine which is probably the 2nd best for me (Love my indian)...But you won't have problems for the most part. Just don't walk in the alleys or dark streets...
The U Street corridor is not as safe as the White House Rose Garden. No place else is either. Play by common sense rules, and you (like thousands of others every day) will have no problem at all. Zippy is quite right on the Ethiopian thing. Check out around 9th and U for that. But the classic eatery in the corridor is without a doubt Ben's Chili Bowl. It's on U between 12th and 13th. U Street was the top black art and culture center in the country in the 1920's or so, and many halls and theaters from those years remain in the neighborhood. Much newer are two of DC's top live music spots in the 930 Club and the Black Cat. Along with a growing mix of bars and smaller clubs and theaters, these have helped make U Street one of DC's most active evening areas.
