Hello-

My 17 year old son (18 in Oct) has applied to college in DC to study political science. He is currently an Intern for both his local Congressman and State Senator and has a possibility of coming to DC for a 6 week internship during the summer, before he starts college. Can anyone help with suggestions or information as to where he can find inexpensive accommodation for the summer? He would need to be in DC, within walking distance of a metro, but doesn't mind a long walk. I assume the options are either sharing a room with other students, or a youth hostel, or even renting a room privately with a family. He has heard about accommodation where he would share a room and bathroom with 3 other students, but it seems mainly for students in their 20's.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated, thanks!

The two HS students I know of (including my brothe4 25 years ago) found accommodations with families for the summer through personal contacts -- they checked with ANY contact they had with the DC area, including the student's employer or program, all family members' networks such as colleges (they asked to put a notice out on listservs, etc.), relatives, friends. Finding families through churches can also be good. This would seem the best approach to me. I think living in the big city is challenging, you want to be sure on safety, and there is a big difference in sophistication and experience for HS kids vs. people in their 20s. DC are is an expensive place. "Inexpensive" accommodation may be tough. It may be helpful if your son can offer anything as part of the rent arrangement, e.g., can tutor, help with babysitting, yardwork, or light housekeeping, etc. Make the agreement in advance in writing.
Good luck.

Thanks Tuneful- I appreciate it. Will look into all of this- unfortunately we don't know anyone in the area but trying to find something through a church is a good suggestion.

Check out the DC Lofty hostel on Capitol Hill. They have a large number of interns staying there and it would be a good situation in terms of making friends and in terms of personal safety.

Default Student accomodation for the summer

Thanks- will definitely look into DC Lofty. Can I ask if you have had personal experience of it? Do they tend to have students in the 17, 18, 19 age group?

Thanks again.

also Universities around the district offer summer housing for interns..I know mine, Howard U. does and it might be a good time for him to experience dorm life before he hops into the college...here is a link to rates which might be pretty comparable to hostels (and safer). They only accept interns working for a gov agency, etc so he might also be able to mix/mingle with other interns doing what he does outside of work.

If interested, he needs to apply as early as possible
