I am a female relocating to the area in June. My job is in DC, and I will be working off tours of 11:30pm-8:00am. I am concerned about the commute as I have never lived in a large city before. I am inquiring about options other than driving POV that would be safe? I know nothing of public transportation or even where to start. Thank you for any help you may offer.

Working the overnight shift, I would absolutely recommend driving. With those hours, you could probably manage a Metro commute logistically (wmata.com is the website of the main local transit agency) by driving from Calvert County to the end of the Green line in Branch avenue, taking the train to Gallery Place, and picking up the 80 bus, which goes up North Capitol St. But both ends of that commute aren't in the best areas for someone who isn't used to city life. The 8am trip home would be fine, but I've worked overnights and wouldn't recommend a single woman new to the city to be on public transport inbound at 11:30pm.

You can try and register to find a carpool at this site Commuter Connections , but don't count on finding one for a night-shift tour such as yours. Will you be working at a large institution such as one of the hospitals, I'm guessing ?

With those hours I would not think twice about driving down to NO from Calvert County. I would avoid the Metro on that side of town like the plague, anytime of day.
