When I think of the Mid Atlantic overlaping areas of Northern and Southern culture that over time has created its own unique culture come to mind, coastal places along and near the Chesapaeke, row houses and older dense cities. Even though the traditional definition is a little diffrent.
You had better not tell South Carolina that they have anything to do with Northern Virginia, Maryland, or Delaware.
Ha! Or Georgia! I remember friends started calling me a yankee when I moved up here. Yes Virginia is south of the Mason Dixon line but it ain't "The South".
^ Va is the capital of the south, the first colony of the English
settlements. It's just that some people down south don't know
where it is or the importance of its history. Nothing is Yankee
about VA but the yankees and feds who live there. Chill son.
lol that's an insult to the true North.

Tell that to us Northerners. Virginia is Southern and that's not even questionable. Just because Northern Virginia is vastly different than the rest of the state doesn't make it any less Southern. DC and Maryland have a very valid case for being Northern and I believe that they are, but it doesn't and never will apply to Virginia.

I should preface that with "Northern Virginia". Sorry. Northern Virginia is not southern. The South doesn't start until you get past Fredericksburg.
The capital of the confederacy was Montgomery then Richmond. I do consider Richmond to be in The South. This Georgia boy won't be calling Fairfax county Southern. EVER.

Actually the differences are what makes it less southern. Southern is not just about lattitude its about culture. The lack of Southern culture in NoVA is precisely why us real Southerners don't want to claim it.

I like Mid Atlantic though. Its a nice compromise. Why the yankees (lol) want to still classify it as southern just becasue Mr. Dixon said so is beyond me. The Civil War ended nearly 150 years ago and Mr. Dixon is dead and buried.
