Thanks so much for everyone's responses. Terrance, we will definitely check out some of those links in your post.

Even considering the move, we are definitely a mix of the two types of transplants moving to DC. Yes, we understand that it's going to be completely different from FL however those are the main reasons that we're looking to move. The sticker shock is definitely a little scary, but overall we've heard amazing things about DC and the surrounding areas (as far as opportunity/growth, city amenities, etc).

Good luck and welcome to the DC area! I think you'll find the best values in Silver Spring on the MD side and Alexandria on the VA side. A lot of apartments in Alexandria have shuttles to the Pentagon metro. These apartments are often $400-$500 cheaper than similar apartments walking distance to the metro and will always have free parking. The only part of Alexandria where one MIGHT pay for parking is in Old Town.

Silver Spring as mentioned has lots of apartments clustered around the metro. I've spent a little time in downtown Silver Spring and its really fun in the spring and summer time with its outdoor shopping and restaurant district.
