We'd like to find a rental for the months of July and August. Anywhere within an hour of D.C. center would be fine, but we would need to be within short (15 mins) driving distance to the metro trains so we could go into DC without the whole stuck in traffic thing. A house would be ideal since we would need 3-4 bedrooms.

Safety is key. Kid friendly is great (whatever that means LOL). Multicultural without being ghetto is a big plus. And, ideally, lots of cultural life (outdoor music, hikes, biking, restaurants, open mics, theatre, ourdoor cafes, etc) - we'll be there mostly on "down time" and feeling the area out for relocation (kids will be out of school, partner works from home and can bring it anywhere to get done).

Budget is not rich-people level, but whatever ends up being reasonable to be a nice, safe area.

I know nothing of the area, so any orienting advice would be great.

"Rich-people level" can mean a lot of different things to different people and you are asking for 3 - 4 bedrooms, you're going to need to get more specific than that.

Throw out a number.

Yikes. Ok. I know 3-4 bdr might be unrealistic, but we're starting with "perfect" and working our way down. Price, let's say $2500 a month or under (hopefully much under). Realistic? Mind you, I said anywhere within an hour.

A three to four bedroom house would run you thousands a month even in the more distant, non metro accessible suburbs. And a short term lease would be even more than normal. What's the reason for such a short term?
