So I just found out our neighbor has apparently complained about a smoke smell in our building that could come from ANYONE but they chose to single out two units on my floor (including me) and one downstairs. Someone has been smoking in our hallway which is gross but this person also complained about smoking outside and inside of the units in question which is silly - either way, our building is not a no smoking building and come on, we're east of the river, surely people should just be happy with a quiet, safe, clean place to live. Still, I can't figure out where the smoke is coming from but it isn't the units this person complained about - I smell it too when I have my kitchen window open, who knows, it could be the projects across the way for all we know!

I've never lived in a condo before so I'm kind of unfamiliar with the condo drama.

For the most part, everyone in our building is cool, minds their own business, keeps it quiet, doesn't make a mess, etc. We work, go to school, do our thing... it seems that one person in our building has always been a bit of a complainer and likes to whine about all sorts of things, including my unit's former tenant cooking at weird hours.

To me this seems RIDICULOUS since it's a COMPLEX, meaning you're going to get people making noise and smoking (cigarettes and other things) and what-have-you but considering we're in the hood, I'd say we all behave pretty well, no one ever has wild parties or anything like that. As far as I'm concerned, people can do whatever they want in their own home, it doesn't affect me. I never smell smoke in my own unit except, as I said, when I open my kitchen window. If it sucks that bad, move to a single-family somewhere far far away from here.

Has anyone experienced a drama queen in their condo building? How do you handle it? My landlord loves me so I'm not worried about getting thrown out for something I'm not doing (they laughed when they got the complaining letter) but I also don't want to be the problem child of our complex either since I try hard to be the quiet crazy cat lady minding her business. I'm not even sure how to handle this since this person is mad at me for something I'm not doing!

Once had a unit where the neighbor let his crackhead cousin come live and dude would climb over to our balcony to get old cigarette butts that my roommate would leave out. I started to complain to management but ended up seeing the dude.

I went about it the wrong way but after my threats, problem was solved.

I have never lived in a condo.
I have a friend whose family owns a few condo properties in DC so I will ask him if he has any interesting stories he would like to share.

No "stories" as such but definitely lots of general drama with dog owners, noise makers, finicky types who want the shared spaces to reflect their tastes, window decor violators, leasing rules, etc . It's like trying to run a business with hundreds of people that you have to live with.

Why can't condo living be like Anacostia: The Series?!

I lived in two condos. In one, my neighbor complained that my ex was "vacuuming too loud" to our building manager. The unit had bamboo floors and a few big area rugs. We had a tiny vacuum from Target, which we probably used 1-2 times per week, if that. To this day I am not sure how to adjust the volume on a vacuum cleaner.

In the second condo, some woman from downstairs insisted that a leak was coming from my unit because it was above hers. Plumbers were dutifully called, my bathroom ripped to hell, and no leak was found. She complained again, same course of events. The third time, I got the property manager to get the plumber to tear up HER apartment, looking for the leak. Come to find out her son had tried to install some kind of sauna contraption in her ceiling years before, took it out, and found that the leak was the result of his handiwork. She sheepishly admitted that she "just remembered" him messing around with it. She got the bill for all my plumbing.

that's insane! I guess I should be grateful I don't have to deal with that crap. I don't have anyone living underneath me to complain about my kittens chasing each other across my floor all day and night long.

Condo living is always filled with drama at one point or another. I currently live in a condo building “east of the river near East Capital and Benning Rd” and I could tell you first hand countless stories from parking issues, noise issues (sex noises), owners arguing with each other during condo meetings etc. However, with all of that said, we remain a close knit community who remain very respectful of each other. Now regarding your issues about smoking, there is absolutely nothing that can be done about someone smoking inside of their unit. Outside of the unit is a different story, the assigned management company should be able formally address the complains and if needed fine the individual that is causing the issues or even take them to court.
