My husband is considering a job in the dc area. We are presently in western Pa and know that the cost of living there is so much more. We are thinking we will keep our primary residence in Pa and just rent an apt there. (this could potentially be somewhat short term.) We need to have good access to the best route to go back to Pa because I will be doing that trip at least 2 x per month. We also need to be in an area around Manassas. ( he will have a district around there) I would like a safe area, and dont want to pay more than 1500 for a 1 bedroom apt. I would also like to have walking access to a metro station. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Metro isn't in Manassas (although there is a regional rail station there - the VRE). Closest Metro station would be Vienna on the Orange Line, where you can find a 1-BR within walking distance of the Metro for around $1,500/month.

As long as you're not traveling back to Pa during rush hour, without too much of a hassle, you can take Route 66 in Vienna to the Capital Beltway to Route 270 in Maryland, which turns into 70 and will take you all the way up to Breezewood, PA. If you tried to make this trip during rush hour, you'd end up in heavy traffic on 66 and the Beltway.

If you did not want to be near a Metro station, you could live west of Manassas in a more affordable place like Gainesville, and have the option of taking Route 66 west and then taking Route 81 north (thereby avoiding the Capital Beltway).
