Hello,

I will be working in Brandywind, MD area, but plan to live in DC near metro subway station. I like to go out and mingle during the night, and do museum and cafe during the day. Which apartment complex (name or area) would you recommend? My budget is $1600 for studio/1 bedroom. Thanks.

I dont think Brandywine is very accessible via Metro. Do you have a car/plan on getting one to commute to work?

yes, I have a car. But I don't intend to drive at night in DC metro for nightlife.

Sure enough, good call.

So I suppose you can drive to Brandywine for work from wherever you choose to live in DC, or it's close-in suburbs.

I do not recommend living in Southeast DC for safety reasons - the nabes around the S.E metro stations can be particularly bad.

With your budget you could potentially find a decent apt somewhere in Alexandria VA, near the Eisenhower or Huntington metro stations. Commuting to Brandywine should be relatively easy via car during the week, and proximate metro access should hook you up with DC on the weekends.

Do you realize that Capitol Hill is in Southeast DC and is a very nice, mostly safe neighborhood? It's definitely possible to find a studio for under $1600 there.

I don't know why people keep perpetuating this myth that all of Southeast is dangerous.

Because there are a few *pockets* in Southeast that are okay. Most of it, though, is really bad.

Capitol Hill is a pretty big "pocket." Even discounting the parts in Northeast DC, it is one of the largest neighborhoods in the city. When you combine that with the Navy Yard area which is also pretty nice these days, it is obvious that while still a majority of the Southeast might be bad, the "pockets" that are good are so large that to flat out say "Southeast DC is bad" without noting the huge exceptions is an extremely misleading thing to tell someone who is new to the area.

I guess it also depends on your definition of bad... Plenty of people live in other parts of Southeast (not just Cap. Hill) and don't think it's particularly horrible. YMMV

I've lived in Naylor Gardens (Hillcrest neighborhhood) for the past 5 years, on the recommendation of a friend who's been here for 20+. I love it. Don't let people who've never set foot in SE DC-- Over the River, in fact-- scare you away.

How is the area around the Naylor Road metro station, in terms of crime/safety? Honest answers would be appreciated.
