Hello everybody

I work in Foggy Bottom, and have 2 kids going to daycare in Foggy Bottom. I am looking for recommendations for a friendly neighborhood, 20-25 mn driving distance in rush hour from Foggy Bottom, with good public schools to boot ?

Well, you pretty much have to get out of DC for the schools, and a 25-minute drive from Foggy Bottom will sometimes not be enough to get you over a bridge and into VA during rush hour. You might want to double that drive-time to put the very good schools of North Arlington and eastern Fairfax County into play...

Well, the original range was 20-25 minutes, so maybe 40-50 would be twice that. Very near North Arlington (e.g., just over Key Bridge out to just off Spout Run Parkway) might come in under the wire, but it would be close, given the time needed to park, etc....

Upper NW is certainly nice, but Foggy Bottom is still tough to get to, and the schools are at best problematic. Metro from VA might be the best solution, but it would be tough to do that daily with two little ones...

Yeah, you're kind of being whip-sawed by the need for good public schools (rules out almost all of DC) and the 20-25 minute commute thing (rules out almost all of everywhere else). If it were me, I think I'd just punt on the commute thing. 50 minutes seems like 25 after a while...

I agree with Saganista. I live in McLean, just off the GW Parkway, and I could not get to Foggy Bottom in 25 minutes during rush hour. And Northwest DC isn't really that much better -- it LOOKS closer on the map, but it could easily take you just as long to inch your way through all of those traffic lights as it does to get across a bridge into Virginia.

Yeah, but I've been thinking, assuming that you'd always have the two kids along, you could get home from Foggy Bottom by going south on 23rd Street, then right onto the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge, and because of the HOV restrictions on I-66 not affecting you with three people in the car, you might be able to reach the land of Quality Education in as little as a half hour if you were really lucky? Getting in might be tougher. You could still use I-66 to the TR Bridge, but it would get sticky once you were into DC. Still, maybe things aren't quite as bad as I indicated earlier...
