First time in 17 years, government has shut down. Discuss below on when it'll come back and going, and tips on what to do to compensate for income for those who will be out of a job for who knows how long.
Federal government workers will probably get back pay for time off. The government contractors, on the the other hand, will face more uncertainty. If contractors are locked out of the office during a shutdown, they usually don't get paid to sit at home. Unlike GS employees, most contractors will not get back pay for the office closure period.
This sh*t will hurt the DC region economy for sure. Just ask the restaurant and small retail shop owners.
Like it or not, the ACA is not a popular law. The GOP is simply listening to their constituents who have phoned, wrote and emailed their representatives. I also believe the vast majority of Americans don't really care if government workers don't get paid. The post office will still deliver mail, people will still get their SS checks, and planes will still land and take off. In other words, if its not having a huge impact on the public, I don't see a compromise happening anytime soon.

Well apparently things would look bleak if it lasts into next week.
There's a 50-50 split about the Affordable Care Act according to most polls. But the majority of polled citizens opposed the de-funding of the Affordable Care Act. In other words, the House Republicans are out of step with the voting populace. And it could bite them in the azz when it comes to mid-term elections in fall 2014.
The Affordable Care Act was approved by Congress and signed by President Obama into law in 2010. This is a DONE DEAL!
And you better believe the federal government shutdown will impact the economy. Some federal government services will not be available to people who need them the most. Federal government workers and contractors will NOT be paid during the shutdown. That will trickle down in a BAD way through the economy. Not just in Washington, DC but other major metropolitan regions where there are federal offices and military installations. Less money for restaurants, retail shops and small business in general.
The Banana Republic of the United States. Gotta love this F'ed up nation.

This has been a disastrous tactic for House Republicans in the past, and I don't see why this time would be different. There are approximately 50 House Republican Members who think it's a good idea to tie significant PPACA concessions. The rest, including the Speaker who has clearly stated this is a losing tactic, are going along with varying degrees of apprehension about the political fallout.
