I currently live in Minneapolis, i'm from SC. I work as an IT analyst... can DC offer good jobs for me?? I've checked online an i'm starting to apply for some positions.
i've considered the west coast but after some research I've decided DC is the right fit for me... it's not too cold, not conservative like the south -- I assume! -- and it's closer to my family
To be honest i'm sick and tired of Minneapolis... the weather here sucks, it takes forever to get warm -- and then it's warm for 2 months before it gets cold and nasty again.
I'm 28 and single. I'm looking to rent... what are the best areas?? I want to leave here as soon as possible!
Probably going to need more information like:
- budget for rent
- roommates or no
- what kind of community are you looking for
- what's your definition of a safe community
- etc..
Look at the sticky for moving to DC
DC has a solid, stable job market for IT professionals. the one catch is , most of the IT jobs here are either directly with the govt or more so with federal contracting/consulting firms, therefore these positions require a security clearance.
Getting a security clearance is not very difficult - just that it can take quite some time for it to get processed.
Yes, I think there would be plenty of good job opportunities for you in DC. The winters are mild compared to Minneapolis, although the DC residents don't seem to think so, lol. There are also lots of young professionals here.
It's way more expensive to live here though. Get ready for sticker shock when you go to look for apartments. There are plenty of great areas both in the city and near suburbs (Arlington, Alexandria, Silver Spring) to live that are close to transit and bars/restaurants. You have to come and check out the area and see which area suits you and makes it easy to get to work (once you find a position).
I guess I disagree with PK12. Most IT jobs here don't require a security clearance. Many are associated with law firms, consulting companies, etc in the private sector. Many more are contractors for civilian agencies that don't need a clearance.

At a minimum, you still need to undergo a Public Trust BI or MBI investigation. This is for most jobs, federal/govt related, certainly not ALL.

yea the hey day of DoD jobs everywhere is over. It's not like it used to be. I don't mind though, I actually enjoy working in the private sector more and have made more money in it too.
OP, so long as you have good skill sets that are in-demand you will do very well here in either sector.
You don't need a security clearance, there are plenty of IT jobs that do not require it.
I am an IT analyst as well, the market is really good out here. I get some recruiter contacting me every day. Most are private sector for financial firms.
The area is not conservative, but very buttoned up. You would fit in fine though. It sounds like a good fit for you.

Petworth, NoMA and near Bolling are some places that may suit you.
As far as areas to live. Most areas that are safe to live within the beltway (or directly adjacent) have plenty of young professionals. What is best depends on what you are interested in. More artsy, sports bars, local restaurants/bars, new and fancy (plenty of these), very urban vs suburban, and driveable vs urban transit only. The DC area has neighborhoods with all of these traits.
