I would like to spend a week or two exploring the city probably during the summer. I am sure that hotels in the city are expensive.
I suppose my best bet is to find an inexpensive hotel/motel outside of the city near a Metro stop.
$50 or less a night? Recommendations?
I just did a hotels.com search of the Washington, DC metro area for the week of July 14th...and only 1 hotel came up at that price. It's the Knights Inn in Laurel, MD, which is about nine miles away from the closest Metro station. Recommended or not, it's the only one.
You will either need to raise your budget (doubling it would work), bring a friend to share the costs, or think about a hostel.
There are great hospitality websites that allow you to see the city from a locals perspective. If you decide to go down that route, I would suggest you cook for your host or bring something nice as freeloaders stink.
I don't think you'll be able to find a decent hotel for $50. You should check out Airbnb.com. It's a popular site where people can rent our spare rooms or entire homes/apartments for vacations or other short term stays. They have plenty of rooms for $50 in good areas, close to the metro and sites.
definition time: "Tourist trap is an establishment, or group of establishments, that has been created or re-purposed with the aim of attracting tourists and their money."
Kind of hard when most of the things in DC are FREE. Now if you say OVERFILLED with tourists, sure, there are some places to avoid, mostly on the mall. But the only true tourists traps are the spy museum, Crime and Punishment museum, Wax museum and a few others. But there is so much that is free that your statement can not possibly be true. I would advise to avoid the places overfilled with tourists on the mall like the Natural History or Air and space museum but the other smithsonians are all great.
There is tons to do in this city off the beaten path too. I have gotten to know this city inside and out and can recommend alternatives to the cherry blossoms, great cultural places, etc...though nada on food as I do think for the most part if pales in comparison to nearby cities.
