Were there ever any plans to connect both segments of the Massachusetts Avenue over the Anacostia River? I checked out Historical Aerials and other topographical maps, and didn't see anything to indicate of a bridge at that location.
I image that the SE segment wasn't built and named long after the long segment Massachusetts Avenue that we all know was completed. And if there weren't any plans to connect the two, then why did DC and the Fed decide to give the SE section the eponymous name?

Yes there was but it was killed by environmentalist. It was to be called the Barney circle freeway.
Do you have a map of the location that you're referring to?
