DC is the north.

You can claim it was once the south, but all I care about is 2016. The mason dixon line is as relevant today as a horse and carriage.

Explain to everyone what characteristics makes DC part of "the north."

DC is in the southern end of the Bos-Wash megalaoplis which is what most people think of when they think of the "north" or the "east coast".

DC's architecture alone makes it northern. Brick brownstones, rowhouses, apt complexes with more than 3 floors.....highly northern characteristics not found in most southern cities

DC has excellent mass transit only rivaled by New York, Boston and Chicago. Only southern city I know that has any decent tuype of mass transit thats more than just buses is Atlanta.

You certainly have a high cost of living thats common to northern cities and gentrification is only rivaled by san francisco and New york. Certainly not a problem seen in southern cities.

DC was never part of the confederacy. Confederate flags are not flown or shown here.

Traffic. Some of the worst in the country. Most northern cities are not much better. Many of the locals drive aggressively. Many roads and hwys are narrow and even on the wide 495 and and i 95 they still jam bc ppl in northern VA cant drive their way out of an abandoned parking lot. Only southern cities that come close to this type of traffic is atlanta and Houston.

Attitude. Although for many years the citys black community offered more of this than blacks located elsewhere within the BosWash megalapolis, this is not a city of southern hospitality. This is a not a city where sweet tea is served at dan near every fast food and eat in restaurant. The sweet tea served at the carryouts is not homemade. A large majority of the whites have an extremely cold northern attitude and many of them are liberal elitists. Certainly not a city where u find alot of rednecks riding around in pickup trucks.

Times change and people change but geography doesn't. The Chesapeake Bay is what makes DC, Maryland and Virginia southern yet Mid-Atlantic. People have passionate opinions on the issue, because it is basically where two regions divide.

DC is the south just like Miami is the south. DC is NOT the south and neither is Miami.

Geography is not relevant here because anyone can look at a map. If people are asking a question that can easily be answered by looking at a map then its obvious they are NOT talking about geography.. they are talking about the vibe, culture and identity of the city which is NOT southern as of 2016.

DC is an international city. We have people from all states and many foreign countries. No one ethnic group sets any standard.

Along these same lines I like the designation by Colin Woodward of the "11 Nations of North America" - Tidewater. I think it captures the unique history that the region played in the formation of the American nation and how that legacy continues to shape the area.

Quote:
Tidewater: The coastal regions in the English colonies of Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Delaware tend to respect authority and value tradition. Once the most powerful American nation, it began to decline during Westward expansion.

DC the city is an entity unto itself, as the capital of the country it doesn't fit neatly into other categories.
