I will be attending American U as an undergraduate coming up this fall. How safe is the Tenleytown area; are there any safety tips aside common sense that I should be aware of? I am from Central California so it will be a big change for me.

Basically the worst of the worst ghetto. If you can believe it, there are only two Whole Foods within a mile radius...shudder.

It is very safe. It is west of the park. The very dangerous areas of DC are mostly east of the anacostia river. Just watch out for those bands of lawyers and lobbyists.

The most dangerous thing about Tenleytown is slipping on a banana peel.
