I will be moving to Alexandria, VA in July and am wondering what are the best areas and apartments to live at? I am looking for a 2 bedroom apartment in a safe area that is $1700 and under that is near a metro or has a shuttle to a metro. I have read different apartment review sites and they make it seem like a lot of the places have problems with management or pests. Does anyone have any recommendations of good apartment complexes that are in as good area?

I lived in Archstone Newport Village and liked it. It has horrible reviews on ApartmentRatings, but that wasn't my experience at all. However, you need to take the bus to the metro (Pentagon), which got a little annoying. It would have been fine for just me, but my roommate worked late a lot, and if she missed her bus the commute went from 50 minutes to 90.

I have friends in Foxchase who love it there. It's a safe area, and there's a shuttle to King Street metro. I also have a coworker who lives near Slaters Lane in North Old Town, who really likes it, and he can walk to Braddock Road metro. Old Town itself is great and convenient, but the rents are higher so you may not be able to find anything for $1700 or less.

Another option is the Carlyle area. It's between King Street & Eisenhower metros, and seems like a nice development. Some buildings are pricier than others, so you have to look around, but it looks like the ones closer to Eisenhower are cheaper.

ApartmentRatings seems to be full of complainers. I lived in a low-rated complex (Southern Towers) in Alexandria and I thought it was fine. Perhaps people just have unrealistic expectations or make assumptions about crime based on the races of the tenants rather than reality.

$1700 for a two bedroom is doable, maybe even in areas closer to or within Old Town. You might even be able to get a townhouse or very small SFH, if that's an option for you.

I made the move to Alexandria from PA and looked at Apartment ratings, don't always listen to the ranters!. I live at EOS 21 on S. Van Dorn. I have a 2 bed for around 1700, inculdes utilities. We have a shuttle to the Van Dorn Metro, and there are bus stops all around for the DASH bus. We have a nice apartment, no problems. You are always going to have a complainer in the group, but I am happy about my pick.

Recommend you post this on the Virginia/Northern Virginia board, instead of DC.

I am moving to area from MOntana, in April and working in DC, have to get to LaFont Plaza on metro. I need a family friendly area but walking access to metro due to changing and late schedules at times. Would like a 2 bedroom and parking, what is possible that is safe for myself and teen.
