I am relocating from CT to Lanham, MD for a position in August 2022 and am searching for a place to live in or near the area that is safe and not too costly.
I need some of your expert opinions. I would love to live on the boarder of DC/Maryland but not too far from 7800 Harkins Rd., Lanham, and near the metro line as I refuse to purchase a vehicle right now.
That's not a bad location to reverse-commute to, as there are 14 Orange Line stations in DC (plus there's quite a lot that's near but not right next to the OL). However, some clarification about what you're expectations are with "safe" and "not too costly" would be helpful, as those stations run the gamut on both dimensions.
I'm very familiar with CT. If you tell me the area or town you're coming from, or the type of CT town you're looking for in DC, I can give suggestions.
I'd suggest you narrow your search to only the Metro Orange line. Generally speaking, anything you find east of Stadium Armory will be cheaper, but safety will be hit or miss, and it will be difficult to go without a car (to compare to CT, those areas are kind of like a mix of East Hartfords, West Havens, and Stratfords). It can get quite suburban. You might be able to find what you're looking for in Capitol Hill, which can have a feeling (and cost) similar to East Rock in New Haven.
Anything on the Orange line east of L'Enfant Plaza will be a pretty easy reverse commute. Anything west from there will get more busy. All of downtown DC will probably be too expensive. Also, basic services like grocery stores can be a little more difficult to find there if you don't have a car. Foggy Bottom is popular with university students. It's an okay area, and could be cheap. Mostly highrises (For CT I'd compare it a little to downtown Hartford: mostly safe but a little boring).
Virginia will be safer but will also get more expensive. From Rosslyn to Ballston, it's very hip, wealthy, and safe (for CT, these areas are your West Hartford centers and downtown/Harbor Point Stamfords). Beyond Ballston it starts getting suburban and might be more difficult to live without a car (more like the suburban areas of Westport, Milford, and Glastonbury in CT).
Virginia will be safer but will also get more expensive. From Rosslyn to Ballston, it's very hip, wealthy, and safe (for CT, these areas are your West Hartford centers and downtown/Harbor Point Stamfords). Beyond Ballston it starts getting suburban and might be more difficult to live without a car (more like the suburban areas of Westport, Milford, and Glastonbury in CT).
Virginia would be my recommendation and while Rosslyn to Ballston is prime you can find walkability in further out stations like Vienna on the Orange Line or Greensboro-Tysons Corner on the Silver Line.
