I am relocating to the DC area in October for work. My wife and I will be visiting the area within the next 1-2 weeks to find a place to live. We will rent to start.

We are looking at the District and the Maryland suburbs within reach of the metro line. We are looking at the Washington Post ads, Craigslist, and basic Internet searches for private rentals and apartment complexes.

Can you tell me if there are resources / assistance / specialists who can work with us long distance and when we get there in locating places that fit our criteria, so we will have a better idea of where to look when we arrive? Otherwise, I am completely lost in figuring how to find places within my needs and how I will set appointments to see them all in a 2-3 day visit. Many thanks for your help.

This is what I did when I was coming here not knowing anything. I knew I wanted to be inside the loop for some reason. Second, I have a outdoor dog, so I needed a house. Then, I figured out how much I could spend, and knowing where I was working I was able to narrow down locations. I used all of those criteria in craigslist.org and found a few places. I would put each of the places' address into this website's CRIME tab to see what kind of crime was going on:

Crime, Home Sales and Schools in DC, Maryland and Virginia - Local Explorer (washingtonpost.com)

I went from there...got a place and am satisfied.
