Hey everyone - I thought I'd share this link from the dcist.com website. Basically, if you're moving to the DC area or are living here now and looking for a place to rent, read this post, it's really helpful information. Be careful of renting scams, b/c they're out there!
There are a great deal of scam rental posts on craigslist but after a while you get very good at spotting them. They usually have the same format, weird fonts, grammatical errors, etc. Additionally, if the ad uses unusual terms to describe where the apartment is (for example, "northern" or "eastern" rather than NW or NE), it's probably a scam.
i got scammed, a guy said before i saw the unit hed add a clause to the lease saying if i was unhappy he would refund all my money, he typed up a fake lease and gave me a real adress but some one else owns these apartments and rents them themselves,my key he gave me was a bougus, he case my 250$ deposit and had afake id, funny looking guy using name JAMES DUNN, BEWARE
If you need to rent sight-unseen, I wouldn't recommend CraigsList either. However, if you can go check the place out (both inside and out, maybe even more than once) and get references from the landlord, then I've had success.

How would I find a rental outside of Craigslist? Thats all I ever have done.
IMO Apart blds are full of undesirable neighbors so I'm always looking for a condo/TH rental in Craigslist

Rent.com, ApartmentShowcase.com, or Apartments.com have buildings, and sometimes smaller-owned listings. However, if you want a private rental, try a realtor? I found a lot of condos and THs through Long & Foster and McEnearney's websites.
I've never actually rented a place without seeing it, and would really discourage people from doing that, but some circumstances might not allow you to visit. Another option might be to sublet for a month or two, put your stuff in storage, and then look after you're here. If nothing else, it's a shorter commitment.

Thanks for the tip! I tried to use a realtor in Philly but they threw me out of their offices (Philly is way behind the times). I'll try a realtor again when I search in DC Metro.

Both of those companies have websites you can look through first, and then contact the specific real estate agent for a place you're interested in.
