I enjoy the nightlife DC offers. But I was visiting in the summer. I'm wondering now that the weather is around freezing temperatures (32F), do people still go out and about in DC or do they stay home?
Is the nightlife more tame in the winter than in the summer because it's so cold? Is the city now more dead because of the cold?
Iceskating is great this time of year. The rinks at the National Sculpture Garden (on the Mall) and Pentagon Row (in Arlington) are open and usually very busy.
How much does the nightlife fall off compared to the summer? Would you say the streets are quiter and peaceful?
I remember Adam's morgan, lots of people, lots of music, lots of traffic on 18th street. And then there's Georgetown with lots of foot traffic along M st. Connecticut ave was cool too.
But if it's 30 degrees or worse like this winter, do people tend to hibernate like they do in all northeast cities?
I would say that yeah the nightlife was more lively in the summer. I've never been one to stay home because of the weather but last Friday when they predicted the low would be 7 that night I stayed home. There have been times when I've invited folks out and been told it was too cold. So yeah people just aren't as inspired to go out in cold weather especially since from my understanding it's been unusually cold this winter. People will still be out and about, the streets aren't dead on the weekend just not as many as the summertime.
The only thing that I think can make the nightlife dead on the winter time is the holiday seasons (Thanksgiving Christmas).
During those periods lots of people leave and the city is quite empty. Otherwise I'd say it's about the same.
