Moving to DC and found a place to rent at 555 Massachusettes Ave. Haven't been to that exact location. Is it safe? Is there a lot going on in that area? Will I be ok walking my dog at night? Thanks for your input!

Yeah, you should be okay there. East Mt. Vernon Square, north side of Penn Quarter. That's pretty tough to beat. It's safe there (in general..it IS still the big city, after all), there is basically tons going on there, and you can walk your dog in peace. You're basically in very close to top-of-the-line territory...

555 Mass was going to be my home about 2 years ago... I decided against it. I found the units to be cramped and the kitchens to be quite bland.

As for the area, it has come a little way in a little over two years. Across Mass Ave you have a park near a tabernacle, there are many homeless residents there. They're nothing to worry about. Pedestrian activity is pretty low after 7:00 p.m. and is near zero after 8:30 p.m.

The neighborhood isn't too bad. And you have easy access to I-395/295 (if you ever plan on leaving DC). There are no grocery stores close by for anything substantial. There is, however, a DC Wal-Mart (CVS) 'cross the street from 555.

Smile me too

I also am moving to that area: 450 Mass. Please let me know if you get any helpful advice--I too am wondering whether it's safe as a single female!

I live in a row house about 3 blocks east of 555 Mass. I walk past that building every morning on the way to the gym (there are two in Gallery Place WSC and Vida). I have lived there 6 years now and love it. Yes it once was considered the fringe and still probably is more so where I live but there is so much in development right now that the area is without a doubt the best pick. Within two blocks you already have Gallery Place with tons of bars, restaurants, etc. There are so many top notch restaurants in this area, you never need to go some place else because everyone is already coming to your hood to go out and they keep opening more. Somebody mentioned there wasn't a grocery store..well about 1.5 blocks from 555 Mass is the City Vista development. The gourmet Safeway will open next spring/summer. It will be only the 2nd of its kind in country. The other is in Seattle I believe. More or less I imagine from what I have read that it is more or less a Whole Foods. There are thousands of condos in the complex also set to open along with the Yale another block away. Also the City Vista complex will feature retail all along the bottom level..Starbucks, bank, cleaner, hardware and another gym (Results). I could go on and on about the surrounding area but here are some links that might help. Keep in mind it is in the city and you should always use common sense and be aware, especially at night. Yes there is a park in front of 555 Mass and there are some homeless as there are in most parks in most inner cities, but they are harmless and probably as the area gets more density they will move on.
