My partner had a fabulous meal at D'Acqua maybe 2 years ago. We're driving up there from North Carolina this weekend. He really wanted to go there so I kept asking him for the name, so I could book a reservation. Well he lost the card and I couldn't find the restaurant online until some random search brought it up.

He told me he had a fantastic meal there. They apparently did Italian style whole fish in salt. You could also have the waiter just pick the menu for you, probably the tasting menu, but online reviews suggest it was slightly different. I know restaurants come and go, but does anyone have a suggestion for something similar. A real Italian restaurant would be nice, but anything good would be appreciated.

You mean overpriced, poor service and subpar food? Oh yeah, we've got plenty of those.

Sorry, don't mean to be overly critical of a place where your partner obviously very much enjoyed a meal, I just found D'Acqua to be very mediocre.

The thing about Italian restaurants--and this doesn't hold just for DC, but for pretty much every city I've ever visited--is that a lot of them just aren't particularly good. There are some stunning Italian restaurants in DC, but you may inadvertently stumble into some crummy ones along the way. My own recommendations for (good) Italian in/around DC:

Potenza and Ristorante Tosca (both downtown)
Posto (Logan Circle)
Obelisk (Dupont)
Bibiana (downtown/Mt. Vernon Sq.)
Dino (Cleveland Park)
Vapiano (Ballston)

...so-so food, good ambiance/value:

Sette Osteria (Dupont)
La Tomate (Dupont)
Papparazzi (Georgetown)
Cafe Pizzaiolo (Crystal City)
Alberto's (Capitol Hill/Eastern Market)
Floriana (Dupont)

Overpriced/Avoid:

Teatro Goldoni (downtown)
i Ricchi (Dupont/Golden Triangle)

Best for Pizza:

2 Amy's (Cathedral Heights)
Pizzaria Paradiso (Georgetown and Dupont)
Coppi's Organic (U Street)

Just an note, there's also a Vapiano's in Dupont Circle and Chinatown. I loved Potenza when I went there, and also liked Otello (Dupont)

I found that authentic inexpensive ma/pa style Italian places in the DC region are almost non existent, and that the good ones are fairly expensive (but really good).

The first two below I'd highly recommend.

Obelisk
Bibiana

then maybe Al's Tiramisu but I think they have gone down a bit.

D'Acqua certainly wasn't ma and pa, though. It definitely (tried to) veer into the higher-end line.
