Is there anyone out there in the Tacoma area that likes to go mushroom hunting? I know of a couple of spots to find chantrelles. Also has anybody been hunting and if so has anybody found any morels?

Yes, I'm wanting to get out and get some, Wednesday between rainstorms. I know what a morel and chantrelle look like, but am not experienced.

I'll be no good for knowlwdge or your area, but want to chime in. I can comfortably know morels, puffballs (and what aren't), shaggy manes (aka ink caps) but beyond that I use my good book to help identify.

I don't trust my ID enough to eat what I find (smart I think!). I found on our property on Whidbey Island a couple weeks ago what I thought was a large oyster mushroom all by itself out of an alder stump. Took it and went through all the ID steps until I was pretty sure, but don't know anyone here I could have verified it for me.

Morels are spring mushrooms. They aren't out this time of year. The thing that LOOKS sort of (stress "sort of") is somewhat toxic and hard on your liver, and doesn't taste very good. Instead of having the sponge-like honeycomb appearance of a morel, it's more wrinkly.

Default mushroom clubs

too bad there doesn't seem to be a club in the Tacoma area. guess need to go to Olympia. I am fairly Skookum with mushroom hunting, but run across some I can't identify in any of my books. this time of year brings out quite a few great ones, if we get enough rain at the right time.
