What is the health insurance like in WA? We are considering purchasing individual health insurance thru Blue Cross or Blue Shield. Has anyone done that? How good is health insurance in WA? How easy is it to see a doctor? Such a major issue nowadays and few people seem to have answers. THanks for your help.

I am taking it that you are self-employed and not yet of social security retirement (62+) age. If you plan on working in Washington hopefully your employer would have some kind of health insurance plan. Anyway, here is are a couple sites I found for you to peruse.
You can get a free Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance quote through this site:

There is also Regence Blue Shield, which is what I have through my employer. I have the the "preferred provider" which cost me less--you select one doctor and if you need to see another doctor or a specialist, you get a referral from your "preferred provider" doctor. My doctor is great and will refer me anytime, no trouble. Saves me money as I do not have to pay my company each month and the per visit co-pay is less. Their website:

We had Regence Blue Shield that we purchased on our own. It's VERY expensive for a family with children, BUT all individual plans are in WA. Think, over $600 a month.

We are currently using a high deductable plan from Lifewise. You will find rates quite high unless you take on much of the routine costs by having a high deductable.

We've had a Lifewise plan before - and I really liked that plan, moreso than Regence Blue Shield. We are high-users of medical insurance, and Lifewise was great to deal with.

Just an FYI, Lifewise is a division of Premera Blue Cross. I suggest Premera Blue Cross over Regence...Regence has horrible customer service!

Totally totally agree - but if you are sticker shocked by the costs of individual plans, and are a "often user" of your health care plan, Regence, from that standpoint only, might be better over Lifewise. We tried to go back to Lifewise, but their rates had gotten much higher than Regence.

I had an individual plan with Regence Blue Shield from April '06 through April '07. The premiums were very reasonable for me at first (50 something non smoker).
However, during my search & subsequent signing up with a new insurance, I received a notice from Regence that starting July '07 my premium would be raised $170.00 more a month!
Right about that same time I read the following in Seattle Times... link below...

Needless to say... I'm glad I don't have them anymore.
