My husband and I are looking for a place to retire and have found some pretty reasonable properties in Tacoma. We have been told to stay away from the Hilltop area, but we're not sure where that is. Can anyone help us please?

Hilltop (outlines the "borders" of Hilltop):

Interesting article and photos about the changes going on in the Hilltop area:

Tacoma’s Changing Hilltop

The key point is that Hilltop is NOT NEARLY the nightmare it once was - and is now considered an "up and coming" part of the city.

The Hilltop actually has amongst the lowest crime rates in Tacoma...But if you can afford it, the Proctor District in Tacoma is really really nice. Safe, fun, pretty, and kind of feels like a small town. There are other nice neighborhoods in T-Town as well.

Default Tacoma

Recently I drove through MIdland area which around 104, 111 and Golden Givens. I found this area still close to downtown Tacoma but you have the larger lots and affordable homes. It does offer a rural feel too.

Crime isn't better or worse than anywhere else. The Sheraton is now the Murano.

Tacoma is not worse then Seattle as far as crime. Don't let anybody fool you. And compared to oter parts of the country, Tacoma is extramly safe.

North Tacoma is fine. Hilltop area is still in transition. Maybe in a few years it will be more viable, although it's better than it used to be. It's a work in process. Stay away from east Tacoma.
