Planning on taking my almost 80 year old Mom on a trip this month to see Leavenworth and Rainier National Park... she has always wanted to go and is looking forward to it...

The plan is to start at Sea-Tac, rent a car and head for Leavenworth via US-2 for one night and the next night at Longmire and then to Olympia the next day...

She is almost 80... so I thought no time like the present and didn't want to be on the road more then a couple of nights max...

Any suggestions along the way... as hard as it is to believe... neither of us have been to Leavenworth or Rainier National Park...

Not sure about the others but in Olympia you can walk the boardwalk at Percival Landing and eat outdoors (or indoors) at Oyster House, Hearthfire Grill, Budd Bay Cafe, or Anthony's Homeport. Great view of the sound and Olympics.

Have a fun trip!

The town of Leavenworth is really cool. Good cheese.

Lake Wenatchee is pretty even for a brief stop / snack. Take your time in Leavenworth. Definitely go up to Paradise; Longmire is nothing special in good weather. Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, Elbe, Washington USA might be an interesting diversion if you have time. Besides the Olympia waterfront, you could stop for a few minutes in the tiny Japanese Garden downtown.

If you return from Leavenworth via highway 97, it's a beautiful drive and many fruit stands along the way. Then cross I90 on 97/82 to Yakima, then 12 into Rainier the back way. Most people see it from the front but not the back and it's spectacular. She might also enjoy Northwest Trek in Eatonville on the way back to Seattle, and maybe the glass museum in Tacoma.

Had a great trip and Mom really enjoyed herself.

Was a little surprised how warm and dry it was in Leavenworth... pushing a 100 one day.

Mount Rainier is spectacular... blue skies, warm weather, not hot, and as clear as could be... snow melt everywhere.

Spent the night at Longmire... reminds me of how the parks used to be. It was very quiet and we enjoyed sitting the front porch with our feet up watching the daylight fade away gazing at Rainier...

Olympia had a pretty good thunder storm the night we were there... have not been in one for a long time...

On the way to the airport... we stopped at the new Le May car museum that opened last month next to the Tacoma Dome... really enjoyed seeing the cars and there was a fairly good crowd in attendance... they do have one day a month with free admission that I though was nice.

So much of what we saw reminded us of Alpine Europe... not only Leavenworth... but, much of the park and surrounds...

As we were leaving the park... we saw signs everywhere for the Seattle to Portland bike race... must be a big event because the signs went on for miles...

We did follow this route and approached the park through White Pass... didn't know about the very long reservoir lake on the route to White Pass... looked like a nice place to camp...

Made a quick visit to the Glass Museum by accident... was leaving the car museum and happened upon the glass museum and learned it was celebrating it's 10th anniversary... didn't have a lot of time... did enjoy seeing the master glass maker "Salvatore" (sp) in action...
