Hoo-boy, another one of these threads, where I compare one place I like to another.

This time, it's Washington and Michigan.

How are they different?

WA: Aerospace
MI: Cars, cars and more cars.

WA: Rather temperate.
MI: Can get rather cold in the winter.

That's the two that came to my immediate mind; I really don't know anything else. Culturally, I'd say WA seems to be more-laid back, AFAIK.

Both have liberal and conservative pockets. Both are gun friendly.

Oh, and since my husband is from Michigan, I can tell you we've concluded that UW is very similar to UM, and WSU is similar to MSU.

This was like those "Find the differences" sets of pictures. It took a minute, but I found it.

They don't have that much in common, outside of having good outdoor recreational opportunities, and being part of the northern-most tier of states. The climates are starkly different.

Of course, in Michigan you have the "mitt" and the UP, you have Detroit and you have woods. In Washington you have the wet West and the dry East.

Both have serious shipping going on, WA on the Columbia, and the coast, MI on the great lakes.

I don't believe there are any major shipping ports on the coast, they are all on the Columbia or in Puget Sound. Port Angeles on the Straight of Juan De Fuca is probably the closest one to the coast in this state, unless there's a closer one on the Columbia.

I guess I am considering Puget Sound part of the coast. It is true that the rest of the coast has little or no shipping, why bother with it when you have the Sound, and/or why unload there if you want to go inland, just keep going up the Columbia.
