Looking (just online so far) at a new home development, Hawkstone, about 5 miles southwest of Port Orchard, near North Lake. This wold be a part time home to start and, in a few years, a full time retirement home. I was a bit surprised at one weather-related site that showed he rainfall in P.O. to be nearly twice that of Seattle (such a big difference on an east-facing side of the peninsula surprised me, but I'm no expert in the area). Temps looked similar to those in Seattle. We wouldn't be commuting to jobs, but would want to be within a few miles of at least some shopping (found a Costco 7 miles away) and hospitals. Already know the distance to Sea-Tac. I did drive through the area once a few years ago, but at the time didn't have home purchasing in mind. I think the area might not have enough sun for my wife, but it may have other plusses. We have looked in the Portland/Vancouver area, as well. We like the idea of a quiet, green area with access to larger towns and cities. Any firsthand experiences living in or near the area? I did find some posts here. Poulsbo seems popular and I'll look into that, too.

Port Orchard is a great place to retire. Quiet, peaceful, not overly populated. You can take the ferry to seattle from bremerton.

Thanks. What about the weather? Appreciably different from Seattle? The development my wife is interested in is actually about 3-4 miles from "downtown" P.O. Main offices are 7272 Tobermory Cir SW Port Orchard, WA 98367. Seems like they're just about to complete their first homes.

Personally, and it's only my opinion, I don't think you will be able to actually perceive a difference in the amount of rainfall from the Seattle area when comparing it to Port Orchard. Sure, the statistics may say that it gets almost twice as much rain but, again, I'm not sure if you will actually be able to perceive it and that "twice as much" is a bit misleading.

Take a look at this state precipitation map --click here-- and look at the brown-shaded area which denotes average annual precipitation of 30-60 inches. Both Seattle and Port Orchard will fall into that shaded area with Port Orchard averaging about 54 inches per year and Seattle at about 38 inches per year (depending on which statistical sites one might be using). My opinion is that you really won't be able to perceive the difference in any given location within those shaded areas no matter what the location may be.

JMO and my opinion doesn't mean much and should be taken with a grain of salt.

I wish every C-D poster had your attitude. And your perceptions are usually more on the mark than many I read.
