Hello! This question is more directed to folks in the Tacoma/Lacey/Olympia area. How bad is the noise from the Air Force Base? Are there specific flight patterns that make it more tolerable or places you would definitely avoid? We have never lived anywhere close to a base before and concerned about noise from overhead. Considering a move from out-of-state and hoping for some local advice. I hope this does not come off as at all disrespectful to the awesome men and women who fight for our country as that is not the intent.

Thank you!

On Whidbey, we just called it "The Sound of Freedom." I liked hearing it, actually, especially when they were having pretend dogfights with the jets.

Army helicopters from Ft. Lewis produce the most noise around the South Sound. McChord isn't home to fighter jets. Mostly it is just transport planes doing touch-and-gos. The area that gets the most noise is the part of Lakewood/South Tacoma directly north of the runway.

Thanks, appreciate the info. Sounds like staying away from Tacoma is probably a good idea after reading these forums

The parts of Tacoma the are nice are not under McChord's flight path. In fact the least nice neighborhoods are under it.

I live in DuPont (on the southern tip of JBLM) and I get very little airplane noise. But the bombs are another matter. They occasionally shake the house. Every now and again they blow off big ones at night. In general however, it is a very quiet area.

I guess I didn't realize they are also detonating bombs. How often does that happen?

Thanks!

It's sporadic. I wouldn't consider it a deterrent to living here. DuPont is a very diverse and quiet community. However, you should be aware that it is very conservative. The majority of folks here are military and most are officers.
