If you are married I would stick closer to base, like Olympia/Dupont/Lacey assuming your wife doesn't want to work in Seattle. I live in some of the new construction in Lacey and there are a lot of military families here (AF & Army).

All of the singles guys we know live up north in the Federal Way area. Even though the commute can be pretty awful I think they still prefer to be closer to the Seattle/Tacoma nightlife. My husband is AF, so the single guys are AF as well and McChord is about 10 minutes closer to the north if that makes any real difference.

I love Lacey if that is any consolation but it is definitely more family oriented, so keep that in mind. I read someone recommended Lakewood but we were told the opposite when we moved to the area last year.
