Hello

I am relocating from the DMV area to Tacoma,WA. can anyone suggest good place to live.

I will be renting, I have a small dog and cat and looking for fairly safe neighborhood. I do have a car and don't mind driving to a good grocery market or to a shopping center, however I prefer to walk or ride a bike. I want to be next to or be able to see the beautiful scenery. That is
about all, I would appreciate anyones input I am transferring and I work at big box/warhouse chain store with multiple locations around Tacoma,WA

CraftyGirl70 out .....looking forward to some get responses

The "beautiful scenery" is pretty much everywhere.

For walkable safe neighborhoods, see Tacoma's Northend (Downtown, Stadium, Old Town, Ruston/Point Defiance, etc.). Puyallup, East Kent, and Northeast Tacoma out by Dash Point State Park are pretty safe. South, Southeast, and some areas of Central Tacoma have more poverty and crime.

I agree. On the map, look north of Division St. The North End is great for walking and biking and beautiful. Many streets have water views!

I can't wait to read the feedback from the OP about the culture shock she's experienced once she's here for a while..

I moved to Tacoma from Texas 12 years ago and absolutely hate it. Cold. rainy, dreary, impossibly horrible traffic, 3 hour a day commutes to job in Seattle, nothing to do, etc. After you've seen all the beautiful scenery that's it. I miss live affordable music, festivals, etc.

Moving back in December and will be very, very happy to see Western WA in my rear view mirror!!

Thankfully, the NW is not for everyone. Otherwise, we'd be absolutely crawling with newcomers. Wait, we already are! Well, it would even be worse.

Apparently, more people prefer Washington cool to Texas heat. Far be it for me to discourage anyone from leaving, however.

I've been in the Tacoma area for 12 years and am still not used to it!

According to some existing data, this is not the case. Texas has a far greater increase in population than Washington.

2014 National Movers Study | United Van Lines

U.S. Population Growth Rate State Rank

https://www.census.gov/dataviz/visualizations/043/

The numbers differ, but in all of them, TX ranks anywhere from most population growth to 7th-most population growth. WA, at best, is ranked somewhere in the teens.

Well, I was primarily referring to western Washington, and specifically to the Puget Sound Basin, where both the cool temperatures and population growth are concentrated.

The biggest factors behind people moving to Texas is the lower cost of living and jobs in an energy-sector driven economy - I doubt they are primarily moving there for the heat, drought, tornadoes, etc. Seattle and Austin (the closest thing to Seattle in the South) have been neck-and-neck as the fastest growing cities in the country. The person I was replying to was complaining about Tacoma, not Spokane.
