Folks, going to take the family on a vacation to the Northwest. We are going from CA. north to Oregon Washington and Idaho. Are their any "must see" places that you would recommend for our trip? Any cities, towns, events or just places that we should research? Probably in July for timing. Thinking we would be on the road a few weeks for this trip. Any ideas would be appreciated.

THX.

Mount St. Helens. Still neat after all these years, the impact of the volcano is still evident, as is the recovery in the forest on the way up. Go all the way to the top, at Johnston Ridge. And check out the Weyerhauser Forest Learning Center too... It's right on the way up... to see how it impacted our timber industry. They have a great exhibit there.

Clear day is a must.

If you want to see the volcano that hasn't blown yet.... see Mt. Rainier. Beautiful in the summer, you can drive through all the old growth forest and see what was there before St Helens blew, too. We have "before" and "after" to see here.

If your kids are into music, in Seattle they will enjoy the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) next to the Space Needle. And of course, Pike Market is worth a visit. The kids can watch cheese being made at Beecher's Cheese at Pike Market, and then have yummy mac and cheese for lunch. Further north, Cascades National Park is beautiful.

Here's a schedule of festivals in Seattle and the greater Seattle area for the summer, by month.
https://www.visitseattle.org/things-...nts/festivals/

It depends on how much time you want to spend in Western Washington/Puget Sound area, and what your travel interests are. If you want to check in to a slower pace and very scenic rural area, with kayak rentals and horseback riding for kids, you could take a ferry ride (highly recommended for scenery, but make reservations on the WA State Ferries website before you go) to Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands. You may see whales and/or dolphins on the way, and there are eagles nesting in the cedar trees around the island. There's a large state park with a view tower at the top of Mt. Constitution, that allows you to see Vancouver Island, Canada. There's a family-run horseback riding business on a large estate of cedar forests and mountain meadows at Turtlehead Farm, and kayak rentals elsewhere on the island. This is a great place to get away from the urban environment and highway driving for a few days.

Or maybe you'd like to return to the area on a later trip, and spend a week on the island, unwinding, and enjoying nature. If you do go, better book your lodging soon. And avoid weekend travel to the islands in the summer; the ferry lines get very long, and the runs can book out well in advance.

The North Cascades National Park (like PartIrish recommended) is a great trip, and has the added benefit of no entry fee. There are many overlooks and scenic hikes.

Would possibly be showing kids college options on trip. What 2 or 4 year schools would you recommend for stopping by? Are their smaller D1 or D2 schools with good to great reputations for education and sports?

Yes, and the Highway that goes over the Cascade Mountains, Highway 20, opened up on Friday, May 11th. You will be rewarded with several hiking opportunities and many beautiful overlooks to take pictures at. Well worth the trip north to go see.

Victoria and Vancouver BC, Canada
Sometimes I like to go Seattle's pier 91 (?) and look at the tourists. (Sat or Sunday). Alaska cruise ships are in town. Get your bike skills in shape and use the electric assist bikes, located everywhere. Or use the alternative stand-up type.
Boeing Factory Floor. Museum of Flight.
