I would suggest Olympia/Lacey. Japanese shops and restaurants are abundant in the western Washington area. You won't have to go without. In the Lacey/Olympia area, you'll easily find a decent apartment under $1,200 a month. There are plenty of job opportunities, with the state offices in the area, office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, schools, and also a regional Target import warehouse.
The home prices and traffic are not nearly the nightmare you'd experience in King county.
Something to consider.

In Federal Way you should be able to find a 1 bedroom for under 1200. Federal Way has a high Asian population and many Asian cuisine options. There is an H Mart and Hong Kong Market. I believe the population is more Vietnamese, Korean, and Filipino, but stores and shops in the city cater to many different Asian communities. Federal Way has a high crime rate compared to the rest of Puget Sound, but the West side is nice and safe (Dash point, Twin Lakes, Redondo). The city also has a lot of park and beach options for you and your dog! It should also be noted that Federal Way feels more like a Los Angeles suburb, urban, diverse, higher crime, less progressive than Seattle. If you plan on having kids, I would not recommend Fed public schools. Overall a nice place to live though, to get your foot in the door. It's about a 40 min bus ride or drive to Seattle with average traffic

Decent paying jobs are difficult to find in western WA.

Get jobs with signed contracts before you move out of California.

Emphasis on second sentence. A lot of passive-aggressivity, nepotism & outright lying regarding employment here. Crap wages, nearly nonexistent benefits, unless your are a Microsoft/Amazon robot in greater Seattle.

x3, also a lot of people who "work for Microsoft/Amazon" and act like big shots actually work for Affirma or some other contractor doing work for MSFT/AMZN but with garbage $18/hr wages and zero benefits. They definitely talk a big game, though, in their 11 year old Audi or BMW.
