Seattle is on a sound that is connected to the Pacific Ocean. I'm not so sure what is so difficult about this.

Seattle is not a coastal city, as it doesn't border on any Ocean.

Seattle is indeed a coastal "marine" city, with direct access to the Ocean.

What? Starting out from Seattle, you can get to the coast in 2 hours? I don't think so. From Seattle to LaPush or Makah, including the ferry ride, it's roughly a 4 hr. trip.

Ruth, you frequently provide good insight in conversations here. But sometimes I have no idea where you're getting your information from. You don't have to go to LaPush to visit the ocean, and from Seattle you can drive to some of the most popular beaches in WA in 2-3 hours, traffic depending. I don't mean to sound obnoxious, but it's pretty easy to verify via Google Maps.

Default just wondering...

what is the prevailing opinion on where 'the ocean' begins?
The Sound is not the ocean - is the Strait not the ocean either?
Does 'the ocean' not begin until Cape Flattery?

Bingo. The Strait of Juan de Fuca is not the ocean, it's the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Puget Sound holds ocean water, but it's not the ocean. Once you bust out west of the Strait you're in the Pacific Ocean.

Should have written "could have". At one time, you could make it from Seattle to Westport or Ocean Shores in about two hours, assuming open freeway/highway lanes and no stops. Even now, you might be able to do it in 3 hours, if avoiding the morning rush. Your statement that it took five hours to get to the coast is an exaggeration. Maybe to get to Kalaloch, via Port Angeles, as I said.

"The Ocean" in WA State context, is anything labeled "Pacific Ocean" on a map, vs. "Puget Sound" or "straight of Juan de Fuca".

Right, well, as has been pointed out here, it depends on which part of the ocean one chooses to go to. One trip I took out to LaPush took about 4-1/2 hrs. It never occurred to me, or my Seattle friends interested in the occasional ocean visit, to drive to the southern part of the state. We automatically thought to drive more or less due West. But in any case, the point remains that Seattle is NOT on the ocean, contrary to what some Seattleites believe. The ocean is hours away from Seattle. This is a revelation to some long-time residents.
