I agee with the poster that mentioned to check out North End neighborhood and Ruston. However, check also what is considered the West END. My home is practically one block from being considered the Proctor District ( very desirable area) and also just very close to Ruston. We walked many times to the Town of Ruston and the Ruston Way.
Because of the economy these days, the West End has very good deals. It is also a desirable place to keep your home as a rental when you leave the area. My home is small but I desired a small home in a great neighborhood than a larger home in a not so good and desirable neighborhood.

Good luck in your search!

Default PCSing to MCChord

Hi
We are PCSing to McChord this summer and are debating on whether we should live on base, rent off base or buy. We will only be there for two years so am a little unsure about buying. Does anyone have any info regarding on base housing? My husband is an O-5 and we have 2 young children. We are moving from the DC area.
Thanks a lot.

Starting tomorrow, McChord AFB and Fort Lewis Army installation will merge to the Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). This moves consolidates housing and offers a wider range of on-post housing.
There are many homes available for you to rent in the surrounding communities. Coming from DC, at least you won't get sticker shock. If you're only going to stay in the area for two years, buying doesn't make financial sense, as you likely won't get enough appreciation to cover your selling costs.
Have a great move and welcome to Washington.

Two years just isn't enough time... friends in the Navy always bought when they were certain of at least 3 years.

Find a nice rental near base and enjoy all WA has to offer... many retired military choose to stay in WA and why not?

Welcome...
