I'd really appreciate any input regarding the Toad Lake (Emerald Lake) neighborhood to the NE of Bellingham. I'm interested in a property in the area and wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any hidden gotchas or the opposite... unknown benefits to the area. Seems like a nice balance between being rural and yet close to town. Anyway, thanks in advance for any input you may have to offer!

One thing to keep in mind - the north side and south side of the lakes are completely different, plus there is no way to get from south to north without going all the way into Bellingham and back to the lake from the other side. According to bike groups, there isn't even a trail between the two sides.

The north end was developed as a resort-style neighborhood, probably in the 60s or 70s (but correct me if I'm wrong). The south side is genuinely rural.

If you don't have good chains, you could be stuck at home in snowy weather. Both sides of the lake are accessed by steep roads, and the road to the north side is also crooked.

Default Just got back...

from Bellingham and went out to explore the Toad lake area for a second time. You are correct that it is fairly steep getting into the neighborhood, but at least it isn't very far. I understand some residents will park at the bottom and walk in if they're expecting significant snow.

Love the feel of the area... seems remote, yet only 5 miles or so into the city. Thanks for your reply!
