I was looking up weather stats for my town. I know June and July of 2009 were unusually cold but I was surprised how cold it really was. The min temperature wasn't all that cold but the maxes were. We had a July average of 78.65°F(!) Only 3 Julys have been colder since records began (1893) and all but one of them was before 1915. The remaining one was in 1992 (I wonder if a volcano was responsible). Average high is about 83.0°F. July 2009 had slightly 9" of rain, 2nd wettest July.

June was similar. Average high is 73.40°F, only 3 Junes were colder, and 2 of those were before 1916. Average June high is 78.24°F, similar to July 2009.

How were other people's summer 2009?

For some reason I can't find the data on the NWS website, so I'll just use wunderground. Numbers may not be completely accurate since two days are missing.

June 2009:

Average High: 75 F (3 F below average)
Average Low: 57 F (3 F above average)
Average temperature: 65 F (1 F below average)
Precipitation: 6.8 inches

IIRC, there was only two or three days that whole month with no rain. My high school graduation was cloudy and cool with temperatures only in the 60s. Not typical of mid-June!

July 2009:

Average High: 79 F (4 F below average)
Average Low: 58 F
Average temperature: 68.5 F (2.5 F below average)
Precipitation: 5.5 inches

Such a wonderfully cool, cloudy, and wet summer. There was even an August afternoon with the temperature at 60 F. Only had to use the A/C for about one week.

Our June was only slightly warmer than your June in 2009; almost had an English summer month.

You call that wet?! That would have been the driest summer we've ever had. Grass would be brown and a lot of plants, too. In 2009, we had 5.38" of rain in June, 9.03" of rain in July, 3.52" in August. No clue what our sunshine hours were, but I doubt they could be as low as 167 hours even with lots of rain. Won't that be under 40%?!

June was absolutely terrible yet it was only 2 degrees below average (I didn't believe it either) the average high was 78 F and the normal is 80-81 F, July was also slightly below average as well. Summer really started in the beginning of July (like the 10th) and August was actually above average.

I'll gather the specific stats, but that was just a run down.

Everyone was like "OMG Summer 2009 was a cool Summer" when in actuality the beginning was just super wet, I still think it's one of the coolest Summers on record but it wasn't an Ice Age, we had some pretty hot days. Compared to Summer 2010 one could've thought it was a whole different climate though, it was basically 10 degrees warmer on average than 2009.

I was in Columbus, OH during July. The avg. max/min for that month was 80/62F compared to the average of 85/65F. It looks like plenty of days were in the 80s, which shocked me because it felt a lot cooler to me when I was there. It really shows that after experiencing a month or two with highs around 90-100, a high in the 70s is a huge shock to the system.

It was a weird year. Spring came slightly earlier than usual, we get a few hot days (90°F near the end of April) and then it warmed up as it normally would, and then it just seem to stall near the end of May and it felt like we got stuck in late spring weather. And then we kept getting big rainstorm (often thunderstorm) after another, often several days in a row. And yeah, I remember sometimes after the first week of July it felt like spring was over. I think August is what prevented it from being an truly unusually cold summer. June was one of the coldest (10th) coldest June on record for NYC Central Park (mean temperature 67.5°F).

I like late spring weather so I didn't mind, though sometimes the rain and extra cloud was inconvenient. Someone I know who isn't much of a hot weather fan was happier during the summer of 2010 instead of 2009. He bike commutes and would rather have heat than have rain mess up his plans. Preferred lots of sunshine.

April was the only month that year we recorded 90 F temperatures here. There was one week in August with temperatures in the upper 80s and very humid, but other than that it was a fairly lackluster summer. We sure made up for it last year.

That summer 2009 was unusually mild here was my perception too; I just did some quick number crunching (from Environment Canada's data for 1938-2010).

In terms of mean temps in July (though not June or August), 2009 was indeed cool.
July 2009 was the 6th coldest in mean temps at 19.2C (66.6F).

In terms of mean max temps in July, 2009 was exceptional in coolness.
July 2009 was the 3rd coldest with a mean max of 24.2C, losing out only to 1965 with its 24C/75.2F and 1992 with its 22.9C/73.2 (!).

The unusual cool summer in 1992 is in the records here as well -- with the second coldest mean July temps of 18C/64.4F (after 1965's 17.3C/63.1F), in addition to the coldest mean max July temps already mentioned.

I suspect Pinatubo was responsible. We had a discussion a while back on what an eruption like 1815 could do to our weather. My guess is that it won't be as cold due to the climate being warmer overall, but still would be an extremely cold summer (maybe July highs around 72°F?)
