I was looking up weather stats for my town. I know June and July of 2009 were unusually cold but I was surprised how cold it really was. The min temperature wasn't all that cold but the maxes were. We had a July average of 78.65°F(!) Only 3 Julys have been colder since records began (1893) and all but one of them was before 1915. The remaining one was in 1992 (I wonder if a volcano was responsible). Average high is about 83.0°F. July 2009 had slightly 9" of rain, 2nd wettest July.
June was similar. Average high is 73.40°F, only 3 Junes were colder, and 2 of those were before 1916. Average June high is 78.24°F, similar to July 2009.
How were other people's summer 2009?
I remember all of that very well!
On the one hand I was very happy because I got to get a lot of instrument weather time flying but on the other hand I was a bit bummed because on most days it was too chilly to go swimming outside.

Agreed. As much as I prefer cool summers, I also enjoy swimming. Pretty pointless to open up the pool that year since I only got in once or twice.

What temps do you record in your pool? The summer been talked about is still warmer than the last summer here. The coldest pool temp was 21C/70F, the warmest was 29C/84F with the average at about 25C/77F. That is for an in ground pool with no heating or thermal cover. Temp was usually checked about 5 in the afternoon.

Hmm I'm going to say on average it's around 75 F. I guess during summer 2009 it was probably around 70 F more often than not considering the temperatures and all the rain.
Last summer it reached 85 F and felt like bathwater. Warmest its ever been. I'll try to take more measurements this summer to get a better idea.
Summer 2009 in pacific northwest was so hot. Here in portland, oregon, it was in the 90s for 11 days in row with 102, 107, 107, 103 in the middle of heat wave. Overnight low was 74 after 107. Our average low is 55. And our average high was 82. On that very same week, the coast (one hour west of here) remained in the 50s and low 60s. Great way to beat the heat! Not far from portland, maybe 10 miles south, it reached 111 degrees, not dry heat like arizona, but not humid like florida, but it was terrible
