There are two Mediterranean climate types. Csa (warm summer) and Csb (cool summer)

Csa - Sacramento, Walnut Creek, Redding, Medford, Perth, Los Angeles, Madrid.

Csb - San Francisco, Monterrey, Portland (Csa/Cfb),

Adelaide, San Jose, Santiago are right between Csa and Csb.
Yosemite is on the border of Csa and Csb, but falls into Csb because of the cool summer nights.

There is actually a continental Mediterranean climate type. It's Dsa and Dsb, both of which aren't that common, since Mediterranean normally have some ocean influence. They except mainly in high elevation areas somewhat away from the sea. A few parts of Yosemite higher in elevation than Yosemite Valley is probably Dsb. Not sure where you'd find Dsa.

^^

It looks like the Dsa climate in North America is only found in a little area in the intermontane west (can't tell exactly where the bulk of the land with pixels showing is closest to -- some area in Idaho or Wyoming?). I don't think that living in that climate would make you feel particularly Mediterranean-like associations though.

It's the kind of place where cold can strike any time of year. What puzzles me is why are such high altitude locations in California so warm?
