I chose Vancouver over Medicine Hat and Toronto because the summers are much milder, and I chose Medicine Hat over Toronto because the summer nights are cooler.
This one's a tough one.. I'm guessing all these places except Iqaluit have regular thaw-freeze cycles while Vancouver is mild as anything.
1. Toronto (cold winters, more snow, less sun)
2. St John's (hell of a lot of snow, less sun)
3. Medicine hat (cold, probably receives little snow, way too sunny)
4. Vancouver (too mild in winter, but has a summer and isn't too sunny)
5. Iqaluit (well, this one speaks for itself)
This, except that I would put Medicine Hat over St John's because it has a summer. Actually I'm surprised by St John's summers, I thought they were warmer that that. On the other hand, Toronto is very close to my dream climate. Very nice climate really.
And it looks like we have a clear looser, how surprising!
If Vancouver were located on a flat plain with the exact same climate it would not be such a desirable place to be - especially in the wintertime. Not much to do outdoors when it is +6C and raining.
But the nearby mountains (with a colder and snowier climate) make all the difference in the world. Some people say it gives the city the best of both worlds, with excellent wintertime recreation in the snow very close by, but almost no snow to shovel off your driveway at home.
I don't really understand this statement. So, you're telling me people that live in cities like London, San Francisco, Melbourne, Christchurch, Dallas and Atlanta are bored out of their skulls during winter just because they get little to no snowfall? I think that's fairly shortsighted. Not sure about the other cities I mentioned but people here garden, play golf and even play soccer and baseball in the rain. It's not that much of an impediment since it's mostly drizzle anyway.
Toronto--a few degrees warmer than I'd like year-round, but nice and similar to here, A-
St. John's--too wet, too much winter rain, summers a bit cool, but gets the most snow, B
Medicine Hat--good temperatures, but too dry, and too many thaws in winter, not enough of a snowpack, B
Vancouver--good summers, bad winters, B-
Iqaluit--too cold, D
Toronto - cold enough winter, warm enough summer
Medicine Hat - very good, only negative is some extremely cold days they get in winter
Vancouver - has a good climate, only big negative for me is rainy late fall/early winter
St John's - interesting but too much snow and summer is too short
Iqaluit - would be nice to visit but....living there, not too sure
Not much love for Iqaluit on this forum. Where are all the die hard cold lovers
