It kinda makes sense to me because the most of Northern New Jersey is much more north and during the winters in NYC and around Sussex County New Jersey are 10 degrees apart in temperature. Sussex New Jersey I hear get 2x the amount of snow New York City gets and doesn't get much sunlight compared to New York City.

From what I understand, New York City is near the northern most point for the Humid Subtropical Climate(Koeppen Cfa), so I suppose that points further inland and much further north than New York City logically would be classed as Humid Continental in climate.

NYC is not a continental climate according to Trewartha too. It is a Do climate according to Trewartha.

It definitely doesn't get anywhere near 2x the amount of snow as NYC. ~10" at the very most and sunlight isn't going to be much different. The only place you are going to see a huge difference in sunlight and snow is upstate NY due to the lake effect. Northern New England as well will have less daylight and significantly more snow.
I've noticed that most days it's more like upstate NY than NYC.
Looked at the 10 day forecast for both places and they look pretty much the same apart from a couple degrees difference. Upstate on the other hand looks totally different than either of the two...snowier, cloudier, and colder by quite a bit.
The difference between Cfa and Dfb can be tiny. For instance, NYC has a January average temp of 0.3 C / 32.6 F and a July average temperature of 24.7 C / 76.5 F. Just 2.8 C / 5.0 F off the summer and 0.4 C / 0.7 F off the winter would make it a Dfb. 2.8 C sounds like a lot but remember NYC has a yuuuuge UHI. It's easy to fathom a climate that's 4 C / 7 F year round cooler without it.
Because once you drive in from Jersey, you reach a subtropical island paradise with mild temperatures and flourishing palm trees.

Indeed. Earlier this winter I went out to Long Island and it was about 17°F colder there. This was during the evening of a warm day when all of the snow melted here and there was still some there.

Exactly. The minimums are higher in the urban/coastal areas which raise the means, and help push it to humid subtropical category. Though I have a hard time calling it that.
