At the airport: 0.1 C in Dec 2006, 3.1 C in Jan 1959 and 1.5 C in Feb 2003.

Note that the airport records only go back to the 50's, so colder temps probably occured before then.

Interesting that Vancouver's record summer lows are warm than ChCh despite being more than five degrees further from the equator and connected to a vast arctic landmass.

I can't think of any other climate at a similar latitude that has comparably cold summer record lows as my city. This is truly a sub-antarctic climate.
Do you have a link?

I see different numbers here:

Christchurch, New Zealand Climate

No clue if my link is from the airport, though.

Find a sea-level climate in the mid-40s latitude with lower summer record lows.

There's bound to be a couple, but if our record summer lows are even colder than Vancouver I think that says something.

Found one! I knew New England would have some.

KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE Period of Record General Climate Summary - Temperature

Latitude is 42°N 55'. It is at 490 feet though, but it shouldn't be a huge difference.

My data comes from NIWA's CLiflo site: cliflo.niwa.co.nz.

There are several sites in ChCh but the most commonly used would be either the botanical gardens or airport. In any case, the record lows given in your link are only slightly higher than my data. I suspect they may be based on the gardens site.

The gardens site is more representative of Ch'ch temperatures, especially night ones. I have little doubt there would be some comparable or possibly worse numbers (thn Ch'ch ones) from parts of Argentina.

I can just see you in Vancouver, with much higher rainfall and lower sunshine.

Having a record low close to freezing does seem bad, especially in a place so far from continental influences that's supposed to be "mild".

I wonder how much record lows in summer vary across the same latitude, from the most continental to the most maritime climates? Probably not too much as I'd imagine the hottest ones mid or low latitude 40s from the equator might have theirs in the 5-10C (40s F) range and the coldest ones near or just below freezing?

Most telling would be how often temperatures near that record low are experienced. Very often over the years or once-in-a-lifetime experience?

To me it's an irony that a place like Christchurch and Melbourne which can grow so many warm temperate and subtropical plants have record lows in the summer approaching freezing...much colder than our record July low of 6.7C.

He might at least tolerate July and August here.
