This is pretty amazing.

(Reuters) - The shipping season on the upper Mississippi River will end on Thursday as ice surrounding locks and dams near Minnesota's Twin Cities forced the earliest winter closure on records that date back to 1969, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.

"There's so much ice through the whole system," said Bryan Peterson, navigation manager for the Army Corps' St. Paul district. "They're getting the barges they can out and not risking getting stuck there all winter."

The shipping season typically ends around the beginning of December on upper portions of the Mississippi River in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois. In 1989, no more vessels reached the Twin Cities after Nov. 24, Peterson said.

This view is why I don't like the late fall in the Northeast. Everything is so brown and ugly. At least in winter with the white it looks better. But this looks like something from the dry season in India, even though I know it's cold and dry not hot and dry.

Ice Jam alert in Wisconsin

Ice Jams Possible Across Northeast Wisconsin

As of December 11, only one significant ice jam has been reported near Keshena, along the Wolf River producing minor flooding. The water was rising very slowly and efforts are being made to free the ice that is blocking the water from flowing freely down the river. Residents along the Wolf River in Keshena should follow the advice of local officials and be ready to move to safety if the situation worsens.

Here are some examples of ice jams from northeast Wisconsin:

Do they store the fish in those pots when they catch them? Sorry for the ignorance about ice fishing, it's not a sport in which we can indulge in Texas.
