Just out of curiosity I checked.. downtown Vancouver recorded only 12 frost days so far this winter so meets wavehunter's threshold. The airport however due to not being in a heat island recorded 36 frost days so far.

Above Norfolk/VA Beach – no chance. I checked Salisbury, MD (on the Delmarva) and it rockets up to 44 days with freeze. So Virginia Beach, VA seems to be the hard line in the sand (no pun intended).

London Heathrow has recorded 19 frosts since the start of winter. Obviously there will be far fewer in Central London.

Interesting:

I tried to use less than 15 days with freeze as the cut off (to keep the list reasonable small)…so London would just fall short. Nonetheless that is impressive for a station at 53/54 North.

In fairness to the other stations – I tried to use only airport stations – mindful of the urban heat island that was discussed above. Still, just like London, that is quite impressive for a station at that latitude.

The urban heat island is a very real variable in temperature it seems. One of the interesting things I noticed was that there are differences between even the small commuter airports in/near downtown… and the big airports outside the city in terms of low temps: There was some eyebrows raised that San Diego had a day with freeze, yet this was at San Diego- Brown Fld (far from downtown)…the other two reporting stations (San Diego – Montgomery Fld and San Diego Lindbergh FLD) never even went below 40 F. Time and time I saw this: Orlando International had 3 days with freeze, yet Orlando Executive (almost downtown) was freeze free this winter.

The urban heat island can never be undrestimated it seems.

London is at 51 north, not 53/54. Heathrow averages about 25 frost days per year, so 19 for the winter so far is about average (plus a couple in Nov/Mar).

Central London averages less than 10 days of frost per year due to the heat island. Infact the very heart of London has a January minimum of 5.5C (41.9F), compared with 2.3C (36.1F) at Heathrow.

Some years such as 1998 or 2002 only had 1-2 frosts.

Where did you get that figure? The stats I used only go back to 1996, from weatheronline.

Just found stats going back to 1992 on tutiempo and the average is 4.4C.
