Here are the average high/low temps for Philly that year:

May - 74.1/55.9
June - 78.9/63.2
July - 85.0/66.8
August - 86.0/70.3
September - 75.7/60.3

June, July, and Sept were below normal.

Luckily we live in an area that has low std deviation of temps in summer. Combine that with avg highs well into the 80's and you got a summer in Philly in 2009 that would probably break all time record summers for a place like London.
Or Western Massachusetts. Your July 2009 ties our record warmest July (typically we have a higher diurnal range, though). Your June 2009 would be our 3rd highest. Your August 2009 beat our record by 4.7°F. So it must have broken our summer overall. I would have expected much cooler from Philly in 2009...

Our 2009:

May - 68.6/45.7
June - 73.4/55.9
July - 78.7/58.3
August - 81.8/60.1
September - 71.7/47.1

Minimums in May, June were slightly above average; August a couple degrees above. January 2009 had a minimum of 4.6°F !

It sure beats Paris-Orly's warmest (2003):
May - 67.1/49.8
June - 79.7/60.1
July - 80.4/59.9
August - 86.5/63.1
September - 72.9/51.1
Mean (JJA): 81.2/61.2

To show you spoiled Americans what's a really poor summer, here's the coolest one (1956):
May - 68.4/48.2
June - 64.2/50.2
July - 72.3/56.1
August - 69.4/51.8
September - 70.0/54.5
Mean (JJA): 68.7/52.7

That entire year was cool, February averaged 31.3/18.0 (coldest one).
I hope I'll never have to experience such a horrible summer. 2011 was bad enough.

The hottest summer month on record in London, I believe, is July 2006, which was 82/64

Can't say I miss July 2006 at all.. like I said, I'm definitely happier in my climate then most

Heh, I was just looking up July 06 for Leeds-Bradford to see if it beat Paris's July in its coldest summer ever...and it did, just! 23.5/12.7 in C, so about 74/55? I don't know when exactly the coldest summer on record for Leeds was but 1988 came out with 63/51 for June, 62/53 for July and 63/53 for August - LOL

Am sure there are places in the US where that would be a warm summer. Arcata, CA? It's cool, but not that bad.

That would be a warm summer for anywhere in Alaska, especially the high temperatures. Finding a lower 48 location is much tougher, but there are a few places on the coast of Washington and Oregon that average around 60 to the high 50's Fahrenheit in summertime. The ones I'm aware of are:

Point Reyes Lighthouse, California (hottest month 61/52)
Point Arena Light Station, California (hottest month 60/50)
Cape Blanco, Oregon (hottest month 59/50)
Tatoosh Island, Washington (hottest month 60/52)

These probably have the coolest summers of the entire lower 48, excluding mountain summits. The fact remains that the vast majority of the 48 contiguous states have hot summers. Even warm summers (70-80F) are only found in a few isolated regions, and if you want a mild summer (60's F) there are only a precious few locations huddled on the West Coast. If an American is like me and loathes hot summers, then the greatest decision ever made weather-wise was when the American government took Seward's advise and purchased Alaska .

Goes to show the difference between the airport and the city, because at New Farnley, south west of Leeds city centre, July 2006 was 26.3/13.4. The stats for LBA in July 2006 occurred a lot at Leeds Weather Centre.

You Europeans should consider yourselves lucky for having such pleasant summers.
