Isaias.

Pronounced just like Isaiah, except with an extra s on the end. The plural of Isaiah, if you will.

Isaiah is pronounced like "Eye say uh".

And Isaias is pronounced like "Eye say us".

But in the last few days I've heard weathermen, newsreaders, and others twisting themselves into pretzel shapes trying to pronounce Isaias in the oddest ways they can dream up.

"Eye sah ee ass" seems to be the most common.

Where on Earth are they getting these silly pronunciations? What is it that drives them to stuff as many extra syllables into a name like that?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Because the name is Spanish/Portuguese in origin and that’s why they’re pronouncing the name like that.

And I believe the correct Spanish/Portuguese pronunciation is

“Eee-sah-EE-Ahs”
