Not good, but I do remember the winters for several years after the 1991 Mt Pinatubo eruption, being particularly good for skiing - I think the orange haze lasted over a year.

Pinatubo had a measurable depressing effect on the temperatures till the end of 1993. Well studied at the time.

Are there any estimates on how much new land area this eruption has created so far? Or is it pretty negligible at this point?

How did it injure people on board? They seem far enough away.

There was a boat that was much closer that got hit. Amazingly no one died and there's only one person in serious condition. Saw it on the local news this am. Sorry, no link.
