Having so much fun! Wish I had more energy to post other areas.

12zNAM left, 12zGFS right for Danbury, CT.

NAM with 0.23" qpf,
GFS with 0.31" qpf

Factor in evaporation and melt I say T-2" is safe bet for Danbury on cold surfaces.

850s crash before before the precip.

Looks like going in to the weekend we will see some snow. I am sooo excited! I have been waiting since April for this day to come! (Only severe weather trumps cold/snow weather in my cards)

I assume dam = 10 m? So it means the 500 mb level is at 5600 m? Some of the places where it's snowing at 5600 m are high surface elevation. 500 mb at a higher elevation => warmer surface, right? So there must be a difference in lapse rate if it snows at one but not the other.

Normal Nov 13th 850mb temp over Amarillo Texas is 8C/46°F

this morning it was at -15.3C/5°F. Holy Crap! November 28, 1976 was the only time Amarillo had a colder temp at the 850mb level. -16.4C (since 1948)

Portland is 36 feet. 554dam there with snow & sleet in the area. Whats more interesting is that the 850mb temp is -1 to 0C only above there...

Only time ever? Or only time in November? One great thing about being in the east is the worst of the cold snaps are concentrated away from us in the interior. High of 32°F forecast for Wednesday but nothing as cold as Texas

Didn't realize it was snowing in the Pacific Northwest. How's the cold air sneaking its way there? The Cascades should block that. Maybe from east through the gap in the Columbia Rive Gorge. Eugene isn't getting as cold:

National Weather Service

Maybe not. Olympia is blocked by mountains to the east and it's still get very cold. No snow, but mid 20s at night.

National Weather Service

Go south, to California at our latitude. Eureka is getting nothing. Lows 60s in the day, low 50s at night. Like every month of the year there.

These places don't get many frosts.

Only time in November. The black line on the graph represents the record 850 temp. Looks like it dropped to -26C in January one year.

Yeah, we get screwed in some ways, has to be a perfect placement and angle of airmass for us. When was the last time we saw 30-50 below normal temps like some out there?

Surprised me too. Usually there's a Ridge/Trough setup. That's another thing making this pattern so interesting. The airmass is just cold up above.

Remember the areas we pointed out not involved in the airmass. Here's the Polar Jet stream setup this weekend.

Next week freezing to northern Florida.
