I'm sure those who've experienced this event will talk about it for many years to come. It's become something of a legend. And without visual evidence, something like this will be hard to believe. But here it is. Who knows whether today's digital media will last long enough to preserve the memory of this event.
Great story and great comment regarding us preserving these memories.

Current temps at 850mb level. Lets call it an Asian-North American Tilt.

Caribou normal is -4C at 4500' not -15C

You can clearly see why we've been cold, snowy and intense Lake Effect Snows

Nice OBS. Typically temps drop with height so based on your comment and my map its going from warm to cool going up. Seems normal. Don't know the exact temps through the layers though.

Balloons went up half hour ago so wait until the data comes back and gets uploaded on sites. You can use NOAA's map and click on Alaska's stations and check.

11/14/86.
11/21/87.
11/25/05.
Same with D.C., where it hit 22F at DCA when the 30-yr avg is 17 Dec, and again the earliest since 14 Nov 1986. It's striking how similar the autumn lows are from the city propers (forget BWI!) of D.C. to NYC.

BWI and Dulles broke both daily cold records today: at BWI, the low of 19F (Inner Harbor came close at 21F) bested the record low of 20F from 1936, and the preliminary high of 34F replaced the cold max of 35F from 1880. At Dulles, 13/34F beat 20F/1991 and 38F/2008. The earliness in attaining lows at each location are benchmarks not seen since 16 Nov 1996 at BWI and (again) 14 Nov 1986 at Dulles. This is Dulles' 5th instance of 13F or lower [EDIT: in November].

Nice stats!

Here's another shot of West Seneca, NY. Looks like someone took a stroll down the street. lol

Now mentality sinks in that you have to adapt & plan things through differently. During and right after the storm your in shock, now you realize routine is not going to happen soon. So prioritizing is whats needed. From where & what to shovel to how much water/milk/food you have left to consume.

On top of knowing another foot could be piling on top of that tonight,. Sweet. I would love to be there right now.

If Rivers or big Lakes freeze over this early we got problems. LOL

But even the smaller ones are impressive to see this early.. And this is just Wisconsin. Imagine the other states/areas which have been 0c or less lately.
